It has come to our attention that some of our clients have been contacted by telephone from agents claiming to have discovered a virus on your computer. They do not claim to be affiliated with Computers Made Simple with MemorySmith Computing but some do claim to be from Microsoft.
If you get one of these calls - HANG UP!!!!
The only time someone will call you to say you have a virus will be if you are on a managed service package such as the ones we offer. If you are standard home user then you will not get people calling you up to fix a virus.
These scams typically involve you letting the random caller access your computer by going to a web page and downloading a small program. Once they are on your computer they will "fix it". It is not uncommon for these scams to then leave other software on your machine that can then put any accounts you use online at risk. This includes your banking.
If anybody calls you out of the blue to say you have a virus then take no chances. You are all welcome to give us a call to see if we think the caller is genuine and we will advise as best we can.
Please be careful who you let access your computer. If someone has already done this then please let us know as your computer may need checking to make sure it is not compromised.
Whilst our original number continues to work and always will, we have added a new phone number for the business by going down the 0800 route. You can now contact us on 0800 634 3569.
The inclusion of the 0800 number allows to make sure we can be reliably contacted at no cost to our customers.
For the entire month of February we are offering Bullguard Internet Security for the cut rate price of £35. This is for a years full subscription for up to three Windows computers. This normally sells at £49.95 so is a real bargain.

Starting the new year out with a fresh and rested team means we have been able to implement some ideas that have been floating around in the back of our minds for some time.

Most home users and an alarming amount of small business owners do not have adequate back up solutions in place. In fact a high percentage don't have a solution in place at all!
The Home User
Most domestic computer devices have a single hard drive. This means all of your important data is held in a single location - your devices hard drive. All of your pictures, financial documents, music and anything else you care to think of is held on a small disk that, if it breaks, means you lose all of your data. Many recent surveys have found that 75% of people have lost treasured family photographs since the rise in popularity of digital cameras due to inadequate data protection.
You don't just have to worry about the disk drive failing either. The increase of encryption based ransomware that hijacks and locks you out of your files means you can lose all of your data forever.
These are just a very small snapshot of the risks your digital life has to contend with. Some people reading this will use services like Dropbox or Onedrive to store their data. This is much better than no back up at all, but again, is not fool-proof and can still suffer from ransomware attacks.
The Business User
Whilst most businesses appreciate the importance of data back ups it still features pretty low on the list of priorities for getting put in place. When you are busy running a business it is easy to let some things slide. Business users suffer all of the same risks as home users but are also higher profile targets. The computers used for a business tend to be used far more than a home user too so have a higher risk of encountering something that can cause a problem or having hardware failure. They also tend to have networks that staff can join with their personal devices which increases the risk of a virus getting onto the main system. Not only that but, when a business computer goes down, you reduce the productivity of the person that uses that computer. Meaning you are still paying the same out for less benefit to your business. It does not really make sense does it?

We deal with clients who have lost data on a weekly basis and see just how severe the impact of data loss can be especially when it turns out to be totally gone - FOREVER!

Since opening the workshop in Verwood four months ago we have expanded the team to include more people.
In the workshop we have David who is training with us to become a skilled IT engineer. David is in the workshop Monday to Friday 0900 - 1300 and will soon be moving to a full time position with us.
In the workshop and out on the road we have Steve. Steve comes from a background in remote support for large scale businesses and is splitting his time between working in the workshop and being out ont he road attending customer properties.
Witht the addition of these two staff members I am now free to pay more attention to the ruinning of the business but also it means we can now handle higher volumes of trade and can fit more home visits into each day.
Just a quick note to advise all customers of our opening times during the holiday period.
We will only be open on the Saturday mornings and there will be no availabilty for home visits during the holiday period but we are happy to help if you can bring the PC to the shop.
We will be returing calls to all voicemails on our return to the office after the holiday period.
Normal hours resume from this point on.
We are please to say that the new workshop is fully open. We have however had some teething issues with the new phone system and have found that some voicemails have not been reaching us. We have our telephone chap on the job and he is getting it all sorted so we would like to apologise if we have not come back to you in response to a message that has been left.

We are spending the bank holiday weekend finishing off the move into the workshop and getting all of the equipment ready so will have limited availability on the phones but are really excited about the new workshop and the improved service we will be able to offer our customers as a result of the move. One of the problems we have encountered since merging the businesses is that many customers would still like a walk in workshop where they can drop off their hardware and pick it up after being repaired.
Whilst the free collection and delivery service we offer has gone down very well we are soon to be opening up the first of our planned workshops.
The first workshop will be in Verwood and be aimed at servicing clients in the Christchurch, Ringwood, Ferndown, Fordingbridge area (plus everywhere else close by). This is a workshop and not a traditional shop so we will not be opening the doors every day for walk ins. Instead we are intending to have open workshops days on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings. The workshop will be open for walk in customers between 9am and 5pm on each of these days and someone will be present throughout the day.
Right now we are just waiting to complete the paperwork on the workshop and are aiming to have it open its doors at the start of September. Keep an eye on the blog and Facebook pages for further information coming soon along with a map of how to find us.
At MemorySmith Computing we have seen several older laptops have appointments made due to them running really slow. For most users, using the laptop for surfing the internet, writing office documents and sending emails, the cost of a new laptop can come as a sudden shock as hardware begins to age.
Well with us you do not always have to upgrade, Because we believe in giving you choices when hardware fails. You could have the option of replacing your hard drive. Many of our recent customers have chosen this service where we replace you old, flaky, slow and unreliable 2.5 inch hard drive. We pop in a nice and new shiny SSD (not really that shiny ;) ) and improve the performance of your aging system far beyond belief. A SSD hard drive increases the performance of any computer that is used for general tasks and is a great alternative to replacing your whole laptop.
Not only do you get better performance but everything else stays the same. What????!!!!
We don't just whack on a new copy of windows and leave you to get on with it. No! We clone your old hard drives data and move it to the new hard drive. When you get your laptop back everything will be exactly where you left it but will run faster than ever before. Not only that but we tidy everything up as well. We get rid of all those nasty temporary files you cannot even see that are eating into your hard disk space. We clean up the system registry allowing the SSD to perform at lightening speed. We also give a virus and malware scan on all hard drives we look at to make sure they are as healthy as can be.

Many of our customers have had issues upgrading to Windows 10 or are nervous about what the changes mean. In response to this we have added a couple of extra services for you to take advantage of.
Package 1 - £60
We collect and assess your computer for viability. Run our suite of optimisation tools over the system before upgrading to Windows 10. We then perform the upgrade. After the upgrade we make sure that all of your programs are still working and give the file system a clean up to get rid of all the left over files from the upgrade process. Finally we deliver the computer back to you and set it back up for you. We then spend half an hour with you showing you what has changed and give you some quick pointers about the new features.
Package 2 - £35
You perform the upgrade yourself and then book us in for a one hour training session on Windows 10.
We are only taking bookings until the 20th July for package 1.
On July 29th the upgrade to Windows 10 will cease to be free so get your computer updated as soon as possible.
Jon & Tracy will be unavailable for short periods during week commencing 20th June until 28th June. Our remote service is still available but you may need to leave a voicemail for us to get back to you. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and Phil from MemorySmith Computing will be trying to answer any calls he can between attending customers properties.
Computers Made Simple (Poole) has merged with MemorySmith Computing to bring a better service to all our customers. We still offer the same great service but with an extra body helping out.
Jon & Tracy are taking a step back into the office and remote support side of the business to ensure that we can continue to offer great customer support via our remote portal whenever it is needed to all of the customers we have on contracts with us.
Day to day visits and repairs are being handled by our friend, Phil, who owns MemorySmith Computing. He has a long background in computing and is more than capable of handling any problems that arise.
The main telephone number remains the same (01202 269998) and Jon & Tracy can be reached directly by telephone when required.
The walk in unit has been retired and we are now offering a visit service at no extra charge. Phil will come to your home and diagnose the fault. If it can be fixed on site then he will. If not then Phil will take the faulty device back to his workshop, repair it, and then return it back to you at an arranged time. Our hourly rate remains the same and this increased level of service is 100% free to all of our customers.
We appreciate this is a change for most of out longstanding customers who have been with us for over 15 years but would like to reassure you that the changes are all so that we can offer an even better service.
